Because of the conflicting messages about sexuality that children encounter from our culture, it is essential that parents offer their children a liberal religious perspective on sexuality. Young children are exposed to media portrayals of sexuality and to information about such topics as birth control, abortion, AIDS, and sexual abuse. Children need a framework for understanding these issues. Although some children do receive sexuality education or family life education in elementary schools, the information is presented without a framework of values or beliefs.
We offer sexuality education in our religious communities because of our liberal religious legacy, Unitarian Universalist principles, and faith in our children and our children’s children. The seven principles of our living tradition call us to offer this comprehensive, value-based sexuality education program.
Our Whole Lives, a lifetime human sexuality curricula spanning kinder through elder years, “...is a series of sexuality education curricula that helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about sexual health and behavior.”
