Children's Religious Education:

Our church community is called to support each other as we raise and develop children of character. The Religious Education (RE) program of First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church (FJUUC) will:

Teach the principles and purposes of Unitarian Universalism as well as knowledge and respect for the   religious beliefs of others.
Support the children in their quest for understanding.
Promote respect for and knowledge of Nature.
Embrace one another as members of our church family.

Our Philosophy:

Parents are the primary religious educators and teachers for their children, but you don't have to do it alone! Our religious education program seeks to support parents and children in their spiritual quest through our classes, carefully selected curricula, social and service activities, and most of all by providing an atmosphere of both tolerance and questioning. We encourage children and youth to define, share, and then act on their beliefs.

Who Are We?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE) COUNCIL

The RE Council sets policy for the Religious Education program for Children and Youth and works collaboratively with the Director of Religious Education (DRE) to select curricula and to plan religious education activities. Meetings are open to anyone interested in religious education for children and youth. The council is responsible to the Board of Trustees.

DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (DRE)

The DRE for Children and Youth is a member of the church staff and is appointed by the Board of Trustees. The DRE works collaboratively with the RE Council to envision, plan and administer the RE program, recruits and supervises the volunteer staff, and is responsible for the Sunday morning program.

TEACHERS

The teaching staff is made up entirely of volunteers who work in teams. Each team is responsible for one class level for the year. The teachers take turns serving as lead and assistant, allowing our volunteers to have some time away from the classroom. The commitment of time, energy, and talent by these volunteers is the backbone of our program.

PARENT SUPPORT

The RE Council hosts several special events each year, and volunteers from the parents and the larger church community are how we make it happen!  When these special events come around, please sign up to help where you can.  Do you want to help with carnival games at the Halloween Party? Help make ornaments for our Tree-Trimming party?  Help with projects to make the world a better place on Social Action Day?  These and many more events are just waiting for your help! Your support and participation makes our program possible!

YOUNG RELIGIOUS UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS (YRUU)

YRUU is our youth group program that meets outside regular religious education hours to provide additional opportunities for spiritual growth and lasting friendships for our 9th- to 12th-grade youth.

YRUU:
Encourages and develops leadership abilities.
Promotes the liberal religious values of Unitarian Universalism.
Creates a sacred space in which to bond, share values, establish trust, generate intimacy and practice acceptance.
Provides opportunities to act on our principles while having fun through social action projects.
Expands horizons through learning opportunities and discussions.

Dan Sexton is the head advisor. He can be reached at 817-461-8041. The other advisors on the team are Don Hayward, Rachel Hawkins, and Tasha Morris.

WELCOME TO OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM!

Some beliefs are like walled gardens. They encourage exclusiveness, and the feeling of being especially privileged.
Other beliefs are expansive and lead the way into wider and deeper sympathies.
Some beliefs are like shadows, clouding children's days with fears or unknown calamities.
Other beliefs are like sunshine, blessing children with the warmth of happiness.
Some beliefs are divisive, separating the saved from the unsaved, friends from enemies.
Other beliefs are bonds in a world community where sincere differences beautify the pattern.

-- UU Religious Educator, Sophia Lyon Fahs

We strive to offer our children and youth a religious education that leads us to deeper and wider sympathies, that blesses our children with the warmth of happiness, and that promotes healthy connections with others in our world community.  We look forward to including you and your child in our beloved church community!
